A routine gives us a sense of security but also deprives us of possibilities. Imagine if you had to do the same job every day for the rest of your life, or had to eat the same food all day every day for the rest of your life. How would that feel? Fortunately, for most of us, we have free will to choose what we do, when we do it and how we do it so this will never apply to us, but people rarely make the most of these freedoms. Instead, people get comfortable doing the same things each day, letting routine take over and not exploring (to use that awful term) "outside the box".
Fear can provide a great structure for inhibiting success. Being afraid of changing something for the fear it will turn out worse than the current situation can make the possibilities disappear. But that's not all. There's a fear out there in many people that actually recognizes that they can do and achieve more, they can be what they want to be and they can step outside of the familiarity of where they are today. And that fear is expressed beautifully in this work from Williamson:
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
So today, see if you can make a choice to change for the better because that choice will open a world of possibilities and make you powerful beyond measure. You can change what you do at work, you can change who you work for, you can change your personal relationships, you can change your home life, you can change your holiday plans, you can change what you do in your social time. You can, in essence, change anything and everything with each choice you make. What will you choose and how will that change your life?
